SCOPE/MOW Welcomes LONGWOOD and HAMPDEN-SYDNEY Students!
HOME
Enrich other lives and your own through community service. SCOPE/Meals on Wheels offers several ways for you to make a positive impact on the homebound, whose daily nutrition is met by the meals we provide. We'd be happy for you to join us.
Below you will find activities through which you may become involved in Meals on Wheels. They range from the less to the more time-consuming, and vary from fundraising to delivery.
SCOPE/MOW Director of Operations Hoke Currie and I invite you to browse these links, pursuing the venue that best matches your service goals and schedule. Please note our contact information at the bottom of this page. Come meet us at the SCOPE Center, 505 Griffin Blvd. Thanks!
Fundraising
BENEVOLINK--If you love to shop online, this fundraiser is for you. Read more to find out how to turn your online shopping into meals for area residents. Login at Benevolink before you shop. All linked merchants donate 5-7% of sales to the charity of your choice at no cost to you.
WENDY'S NIGHT--Never underestimate the power of one or the little "steady-eddy." For all fast-food-junkies, Wendy's has it all. Monthly 3rd Thursday, 4-8 p.m., is Wendy's Night to benefit SCOPE/MOW. We receive a percentage of all INSIDE sales in Farmville. Sorry, "Drive-thru" does not count.
BURGER KING NIGHT--Burger King Night for Meals on Wheels is monthly, 1st Thursday, 5-9 p.m. MOW will receive a percentage of ALL sales. So, "have it your way" & thank BK for their support of MOW. Only in Farmville.
CHEFS' FOOD FESTIVAL--This annual fundraiser is held in Longwood's Dorrill Dining Hall, usually at the start of Spring Break. We need help with setup and breakdown Friday and Sunday, as well as servers the night of the event. Some students may be interested in this event which offers an easy way to earn many community service hours in one weekend.
MARKETING--We need ideas and manpower to carry out fundraising events. This opportunity might appeal to students interested in a career in non-profit work, event planning, business or economics.
Meal Delivery
ADOPT-A-ROUTE
(10:45 a.m. pickup @ Southside Community Hospital)
Deliver meals once per week to the same clients. You will form warm, caring relationships with clients, many of whom are lonely and enjoy a minute or so of company, especially with young folks.
Your route lasts about one hour and we provide substitutes during breaks and exams as necessary--please let us know. Professors or sponsors of organizations to which you belong are great references. Read on:
GROUPS rotate drivers weekly. Your group contactperson completes the application and ensures that the route has drivers each week. Area churches and Greek societies from Longwood have successfully delivered this way. Any group, no matter how informal, wanting to organize, is welcome!
PAIRS--You may adopt a route in the same fashion as described below for individuals, but you partner with a friend. You may each complete the regular application.
INDIVIDUALS--You are welcome to adopt your own route for weekly delivery. Individuals may opt to "substitute drive," weekly notifying me Monday of your availability to substitute for a regular driver. You may complete the regular application.
Thanks for your interest. If you wish to submit an application, you may mail it or bring it to the SCOPE Center (leave in mailbox if no one is there). Call or email if you want. Hope to see you!
